My Web 2.0 Learning Object

Paper.li lets you create a title for your paper, search the web for resources and articles, and add them into a newspaper tailored specifically for you! Paper.li says, "Create your online newspaper in minutes. Automatically find, publish & promote engaging articles, photos and videos from across the web."

I see paper.li being used in my classroom in Grade 4 Language - Media Literacy. The overall expectation that I think I could use Paper.li for within this classroom would be 3. create a variety of media texts for different purposes and audiences, using appropriate forms, conventions, and techniques;

I think that I would have already spoken with my students about specific expectations 3.1 - describe in detail the topic, purpose, and audience for media tests they plan to create - and would have my students using their knowledge to create a paper.li as a culminating activity.

Using paper.li to create a newspaper, with their own title, resources, articles etc. would involve students practicing the knowledge that they gained during specific expectation 3.1, but furthering it. Rather than simple describing the topic, purpose and audience, they are creating a topic, a purpose and an audience, which means that not only would they know it, they are now doing it as well. Through this process, students will be constructing a learning object, which will allow them to express their knowledge.

I have attached an example work that a student of mine could make, based on their interests. They have demonstrated the importance of the title, by having a specific name which would attract a specific audience. This demonstrates their knowledge of topic, and how topic, purpose and audience are connected.

Topic is a matter dealt with in a text, discourse, or conversation; a subject. In the case of the example, the topic is Miniature Poodles, which is why the newspaper received the title Miniature Poodle Times

Purpose is the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists. In the case of the example, the reason for which the newspaper exists is to provide readers with information about new and relevant facts about miniature poodles.

Audience is the assembled spectators, listeners or readers. In the case of the example, the audience would be miniature poodle owners, or people who are interested in buying or getting a miniature poodle.
